Tripadvisor reviews: ranking, badges and reuse rules
Tripadvisor reviews are first-hand accounts from travelers, each with one overall rating of one to five bubbles, written within a year of the visit. Tripadvisor turns them into a Popularity Ranking that it recalculates every day from the quality, recency and quantity of reviews, and it counts a recent review for more than an old one. Its Travelers’ Choice award goes to roughly the top 10% of listings, judged on twelve months of reviews. If you quote those reviews on your own site, Tripadvisor’s guidelines ask for quotation marks, the review date and clear attribution, and they limit when you may feature a five-bubble rave.
Those rules are public. What Tripadvisor does not publish is how thin the recent slice of reviews is for an ordinary business. JustReview imports Tripadvisor reviews for tour operators, attractions, restaurants and hotels, and on 7 October 2026 we counted, for the 18 listings in our data with a complete record of 2025, how much of their lifetime review count arrived in that one year. For half of them it was 5% or less. The count printed on a listing is a lifetime total, while the ranking leans on the newest reviews, and for many businesses that recent slice is a handful a year.
How Tripadvisor reviews work
The rows below come from Tripadvisor’s review guidelines, its article on the Popularity Ranking and its awards page, all read on 7 October 2026.
| Element | How it works |
|---|---|
| Who can review | Anyone who experienced the business first-hand; owners, staff and anyone affiliated with it cannot |
| Time limit | Within one year of the experience |
| Rating | One overall score of 1 to 5 bubbles per review |
| Incentives | Not allowed for any review, whatever its rating, and not allowed for staff who collect reviews |
| Asking for reviews | Allowed, but happy and unhappy customers must get the identical path to Tripadvisor |
| Ranking | Popularity Ranking, recalculated daily from quality, recency, quantity and consistency |
| Awards | Travelers’ Choice for about the top 10% of listings, Best of the Best for the top 1%, from 12 months of reviews |
The asking row trips up more businesses than any other. A survey that sends five-star customers to Tripadvisor and everyone else to a private feedback form breaks the rule, because Tripadvisor requires the experience of leaving a positive and a negative review to be identical. The incentive row reaches further than most owners expect: a free drink, a discount or a prize draw for reviewers are all out, and so is a bonus for the staff member who collects the most reviews.
How the Tripadvisor Popularity Ranking uses your reviews
Tripadvisor names three ingredients and one interaction between them. Quality is the bubble ratings. Recency is spelled out plainly: “Recent reviews are more valuable than older reviews”, and older ones “are not counted as much towards a business’s ranking as a review written more recently”. Quantity matters for confidence, but Tripadvisor stresses that 1,000 reviews do not automatically beat 500. Consistency over time, strengthened in algorithm updates in 2016 and 2018, ties the three together. The weights are not published, so no outside tool can recompute a position.
What that means in practice is that the review count on a listing and the reviews the ranking leans on are two different numbers. Here is how far apart they were on the listings we import, grouped by the share of each listing’s lifetime reviews that arrived during 2025:
| Share of lifetime reviews added in 2025 | Listings | Reviews held at end of 2025 | Added in 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 3 | 74 | 0 |
| 0.1% to 5% | 6 | 6,913 | 320 |
| 6% to 10% | 4 | 553 | 39 |
| 20% to 25% | 3 | 1,111 | 232 |
| More than 50% | 2 | 2,008 | 1,532 |
| All 18 listings | 18 | 10,659 | 2,123 |
The median listing added 5.6% of its lifetime count in 2025, and 11 of the 18 received fewer than ten Tripadvisor reviews in the whole year. The largest listing in the group held 5,609 reviews at the end of 2025 and added 281 of them that year, 5.0%. At the other end, two operators that only began collecting Tripadvisor reviews in 2023 and 2024 added 1,532 between them, 72% of everything the 18 listings received in 2025.
We cannot see ranking positions, so this table shows the inputs rather than a measured ranking effect. But if recency carries the weight Tripadvisor describes, a listing with a famous lifetime count is defending its place with a trickle, while a newcomer with a fraction of the count is feeding the algorithm every week. The same pattern holds for Google, as our measurements of normal review velocity show: the big lifetime number says little about the last twelve months.
Tripadvisor review volume has not recovered since 2019
Twelve of the 18 listings have Tripadvisor reviews going back to at least 2017, which lets us follow the same businesses year by year. The right-hand column leaves out the largest listing, which otherwise drowns out the rest.
| Year | Reviews, all 12 listings | Without the largest listing |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 724 | 229 |
| 2019 | 803 | 267 |
| 2020 | 233 | 134 |
| 2021 | 278 | 155 |
| 2022 | 359 | 139 |
| 2023 | 409 | 141 |
| 2024 | 230 | 99 |
| 2025 | 359 | 78 |
Ten of the twelve collected fewer Tripadvisor reviews in 2025 than in 2019, and together they reached 44.7% of their 2019 volume. Without the largest listing, the other eleven collected 78 reviews in 2025, fewer than the 134 they received in 2020, the year travel stopped.
Is that Tripadvisor losing reviewers, or these businesses shrinking? The cleanest check is to put Tripadvisor next to Google on the same businesses. Nine of our accounts had both sources importing through the whole of 2025:
| Business | Tripadvisor reviews, 2025 | Google reviews, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| A, taxi tours, United Kingdom | 281 | 54 |
| B, walking tours, Austria | 182 | 416 |
| C, tour operator, Brazil | 164 | 240 |
| D, city tours, United Kingdom | 43 | 7 |
| E, boat tours, Canada | 29 | 44 |
| F, art studio tours, United States | 9 | 18 |
| G, hotel, Spain | 7 | 40 |
| H, comedy club, United States | 1 | 41 |
| I, laser tag arena, Germany | 0 | 23 |
| Total | 716 | 883 |
Google brought more reviews on seven of the nine. The two exceptions are both British tour companies, where Tripadvisor still dominates, and without business A Google led 829 to 435. For most of these businesses the reviews have not stopped. They have moved, and Tripadvisor now gets the smaller share. Seasonality adds a second squeeze. Leaving out the single operator that dominates the 2025 volume, June to September brought 49.3% of the group’s 2025 Tripadvisor reviews and December to February only 13.5%, so a seasonal business starts every spring with its freshest reviews months old.
Travelers’ Choice: what the criteria say
Tripadvisor’s awards page sets four conditions. The listing must have been on Tripadvisor for at least 12 months, it must “receive a threshold number of reviews within the evaluation period”, it must “maintain or exceed a minimum bubble rating”, and it must rank among the top 10% of listings for Travelers’ Choice or the top 1% for Best of the Best. Tripadvisor can also withhold an award over safety incidents, discrimination, breaches of its animal welfare policy, fraudulent reviews or intimidation of reviewers. It does not publish the review threshold or the minimum rating.
We cannot say where the threshold sits, so we will not guess who qualifies. What our data shows is the base the award is judged on: 11 of the 18 listings received fewer than ten reviews in 2025 and three received none, and the award looks at a twelve-month window. A listing that adds a handful of reviews a year is judged on a handful of reviews, and one weak visit weighs heavily.
If you do win, Tripadvisor’s guide for experience providers says the award logo can go on “print and digital ads, email signatures, brochures, blog posts, social channels, and on your website”, with the assets on its brand guide site. Its partner guidelines add one limit worth knowing: an award won by one property cannot describe another, or a whole group, unless every property in it won that year.
The rules for quoting Tripadvisor reviews on your website
The most detailed statement of how Tripadvisor wants its reviews quoted is its Brand Guidelines for Partners, a March 2020 edition still served from tripadvisor.com on 7 October 2026. It is written for partners and advertising, and it says such material should be approved by Tripadvisor before publication, so read it as the standard you would be measured against rather than a contract you have signed. The rules for review content:
- Quotation marks. Text from a traveler review must appear inside quotation marks.
- The date. “When using review content, you MUST include the date of the quoted review.”
- Attribution. It must be clear the quote comes from a traveler on Tripadvisor, with wording like “A Tripadvisor traveler review”; a member name is fine with Tripadvisor acknowledged.
- No editing or borrowing. Do not edit a review to change its meaning, use a review of one place for another, put review text over a photo, or quote rating labels such as “Excellent” as if a traveler wrote them.
- The aggregate rating. Show it with the words “Tripadvisor Traveler Rating” and the number of reviews it is based on.
- The rave rule. Feature a 5-bubble review only if you received one in the past six months, have an overall rating of 4 bubbles or higher and are in good standing.
- Print in the UK. Printed marketing there needs the reviewer’s consent.
The rave rule is the one a calendar can break. We checked it against every month-end of 2025 for the same 18 listings, asking whether each had a 5-bubble review dated in the previous six months:
| Month-ends of 2025 when a fresh 5-bubble review existed | Listings |
|---|---|
| All 12 | 9 |
| 9 of 12 | 2 |
| 6 of 12 | 2 |
| 5 of 12 | 2 |
| None | 3 |
Across 216 listing-months the condition held in 148, or 68.5%. Half the listings could feature a five-bubble review at any point in 2025, and three could not at any point. Volume alone does not decide it. One listing with only four Tripadvisor reviews in 2025 qualified at every month-end because its five-bubble reviews were spread across the year, while one with seven qualified at five, because all seven arrived from August onwards. A steady trickle beats a burst, which is also what the consistency factor in the ranking rewards.
Showing Tripadvisor reviews with JustReview
The reason to use us for this is that the date and the source travel with every review. Our Tripadvisor reviews widget connects from the public listing URL, imports the full history, which in our data goes back to 2008, and refreshes every 24 hours. Each testimonial card shows the review date and a “Review from Tripadvisor” line, and on the Pro and Ultimate plans that line links to the review on Tripadvisor. Reviews appear newest first unless you switch on best reviews first, so the cards on screen are the recent ones the ranking also counts, and you can put Tripadvisor next to Google in one widget, which for most businesses in the table above is now where the fresh reviews are. With review curation you can hide a single review that describes a tour or menu you have since changed, without editing anyone’s words.
For the practical setup, including which listing URLs import and which do not, see our guide to adding Tripadvisor reviews to a website. For restaurants, which rate very differently from tours on the same platform, see our restaurant review data.
Three caveats. Our widget draws stars, not Tripadvisor’s green bubbles and owl, and it does not add quotation marks, so a paid campaign that has to follow the partner guidelines to the letter should use Tripadvisor’s own assets for the rating. The date is a per-widget switch, on by default in the testimonials widget and off by default in the Reviews Page widget; keep it on for Tripadvisor quotes. And the average our widget shows for Tripadvisor is a plain average of the reviews we hold, not Tripadvisor’s bubble rating, so quote the bubble rating from your listing if you need that exact number.
Tripadvisor is part of the Ultimate plan at EUR 39 a month, which also includes review curation and several profiles per platform, and paid plans start with a 7-day free trial; details are on the pricing page. Create your account, paste your listing URL, and see in the first import how many of your reviews are from the last twelve months.
How this was measured
All counts ran on 7 October 2026 against the JustReview production database, with SELECT queries only, by review date. The database holds 26 Tripadvisor connectors on 26 accounts. Three accounts hold no reviews, among them the one connected to a member profile rather than a listing. Two accounts point at the same hotel, which we counted once. Four listings were left out because our last import of their Tripadvisor reviews ran in 2022, 2023 or September 2025, so 2025 would look emptier than it was. That leaves 18 listings whose most recent import ran in 2026, after the year had closed.
The Google comparison uses the nine of those businesses that also have a Google import current through 2025. The seasonality figure leaves out the one operator that received 1,368 of the group’s 2,123 reviews in 2025. The six-month check uses the last day of each month of 2025 and counts reviews with five bubbles dated in the six months before it; it says nothing about the other two conditions of the rule. Tripadvisor’s rules were read on its own pages on 7 October 2026. Businesses are not named because they are our customers. Eighteen listings are a small sample, and most of them are tours and attractions, so read the results as what we saw on them, not as a law for every listing on Tripadvisor.
FAQ
How does Tripadvisor rank businesses?
Tripadvisor ranks listings in a city and category with its Popularity Ranking, which it recalculates every day from the quality, recency and quantity of reviews and from how consistent those reviews are over time. Recent reviews count for more than old ones, and a larger number of reviews does not on its own put a listing ahead. Tripadvisor does not publish the weights, so nobody outside the company can recompute a position. The bubble rating is only one input, which is why a listing with a lower bubble rating can rank above one with a higher rating.
Do old Tripadvisor reviews still count?
They stay on the listing and in the review count, but Tripadvisor says older reviews are not counted as much towards the ranking as reviews written more recently. That gap is large in practice. On 7 October 2026 we looked at 18 Tripadvisor listings with a complete record of 2025 in our data: half of them collected 5% or less of their lifetime review count during that year, and three collected none.
How do you get a Travelers' Choice award?
There is no application. Tripadvisor picks winners from reviews posted over a 12-month period. A listing must have been on Tripadvisor for at least 12 months, receive a threshold number of reviews in the evaluation period and keep at least a minimum bubble rating, and the winners are roughly the top 10% of listings; Best of the Best is the top 1%. Tripadvisor does not publish the exact review threshold or the minimum rating, and it can withhold an award over fraudulent reviews or safety incidents.
Can I quote a five-star Tripadvisor review in my marketing?
Tripadvisor's brand guidelines for partners allow it only if the business received a 5-bubble review within the past six months, has an overall rating of at least 4 bubbles and is in good standing. The quote must sit in quotation marks, carry its date and be clearly marked as a Tripadvisor traveler review. In our data only 9 of 18 listings met the six-month condition at every month-end of 2025, and three never did.
