Add Google Reviews to Shopify

You add Google reviews to Shopify with two pastes and no app: the library tag goes into theme.liquid, and the widget block goes into a Custom Liquid section on the template where the reviews should appear. Connect your Google Business Profile first, and the reviews refresh on their own every 24 hours. Editing theme code requires a purchased theme, not a trial one.

What you need before you start: a purchased theme and Online Store 2.0

Shopify lets you edit theme code only after the theme is bought, so a trial theme blocks this path entirely. The easy route, adding a Custom Liquid section in the theme customiser, exists only on Online Store 2.0 themes; on older vintage themes you edit the template files by hand. Neither is a plan limit, so Basic works the same as Advanced here.

How to add Google reviews to Shopify, in three steps

  1. Connect the Google Business Profile you manage. Sign in with Google and grant access to a profile you own. If you also sell on eBay, Amazon or Etsy, connect those in the same panel: on Shopify that usually matters more than Google, see the numbers below.
  2. Paste the library tag into theme.liquid. Online Store, Themes, Edit code, then theme.liquid, before the closing body tag. This loads the script on every page of the storefront.
  3. Add the container in a Custom Liquid section. In the theme customiser, on the template that should show the reviews: home page, product template, or both. Sections are per template, which is the single thing that trips people up on Shopify.

Shopify is the one platform where Google is in the minority

On 4 August 2026 we identified the platform behind every site running our widget and then looked at what each account connects. Across 19 Shopify accounts: Google 47%, Facebook 47%, eBay 42%, Amazon 32%, and a marketplace source of some kind 63%. On WooCommerce the same measurement gives Google 78% and marketplace 17%. The median number of visible reviews per account is 1758 on Shopify against 190 on WooCommerce, because a Shopify merchant usually arrives with years of marketplace feedback rather than an empty Google profile. If that is you, connect the marketplace first and treat Google as the addition.

The Shopify traps worth knowing before you paste

Where to put the reviews in a Shopify store

Shop reviews and product reviews answer different questions, so they belong in different templates. Reviews of the shop, meaning Google, Facebook and marketplace seller feedback, answer whether this store can be trusted with a card. They belong on the home page, in the footer site-wide, and near the cart. Reviews of one product belong on that product template and nowhere else. The pattern on live storefronts matches: of the 20 Shopify sites running our widget, 19 load the library site-wide and 10 of the 12 product pages we could open carry it too. If you only do one thing, put shop reviews on the home page and in the footer, and leave the product template until you actually have product-level reviews.

Do you need an app from the Shopify App Store?

No, and the honest comparison is worth making. App Store listings install in one click and handle updates for you, which is real convenience. The cost is a second billing relationship, an app that can slow the storefront down, and, on most of them, review data that lives inside the app. Two pastes into the theme keep the reviews in your own account and work on any theme you have bought. Pick the one that matches how you like to run the store.

Both layouts, running on this page

Not a screenshot and not a mockup. The carousel below and the floating badge in the corner are both loaded by the same script you would paste into your Shopify site. On your site they would show your Google reviews, in exactly these layouts. Here the badge shows our Google rating and the carousel shows our reviews from Capterra, G2 and Facebook, because that is where our English-speaking customers wrote and we would rather show you real ones than a mockup. The badge is the free layout; the carousel starts on Plus, 9 EUR a month, which is exactly the difference this page keeps talking about.

Questions people ask about Google reviews on Shopify

How do you add reviews to your Shopify store?
For reviews of your business, paste a widget: the library tag in theme.liquid and a container in a Custom Liquid section on the template that should show them. For reviews of individual products, use a product review app or import them per product. The two are different data and belong in different places.
How do I import reviews into Shopify?
You connect the source, you do not copy text. Sign in to the review tool with the Google account that manages your profile, add your marketplace seller profiles if you have them, and the reviews are pulled in and refreshed every 24 hours. CSV import exists for reviews you collected elsewhere.
Can you leave reviews on a Shopify store?
Not natively. Shopify has no built-in review collection for the shop itself, which is why merchants point customers at their Google profile or use a review page. Product reviews need an app or a tool that provides a review form.
Is there a free way to import reviews to Shopify?
Yes, within limits. The JustReview free plan covers Google and Facebook, up to 100 stored reviews, refreshed daily, with the badge layout. Marketplace sources such as eBay, Amazon and Etsy, which is what most Shopify merchants actually want, start on a paid plan.
Do I need an app to show Google reviews on Shopify?
No. Two pastes into the theme are enough. On 4 August 2026 we loaded the home page of all 20 Shopify storefronts running our widget on a custom domain, and 17 rendered the reviews block from theme code alone.
Will this work on a myshopify.com address?
Yes, that is a live storefront and it counts as a real installation. Theme preview links are the exception: they are not public pages, so confirm on the published storefront rather than in the theme editor.
